Exploring The Best Outdoor Craft Breweries In Texas

Frontyard Brewing is a very popular family and pet-friendly craft beer brewery located in Spicewood, Texas approximately 30 minutes northwest of Austin.

Founded by Chad and Amber Worner and partners, the brewery began during the pandemic to focus on community connection, supporting local schools and non-profits that aid women and children. They have been recognized as a top family-friendly brewery in the Austin area.

Key Details about Frontyard Brewing:

  • Atmosphere: Known for a relaxed “Texas Hill Country” vibe, it is designed for families and large groups, with ample outdoor green space.
  • Amenities: Features include six outdoor pickleball courts (reservations required), lawn games like Gaga Ball, and space for kids to play.
  • Drink Menu: Offers a wide selection of beer styles, including a signature Hazy IPA, Belgian Golden Ale, West Coast Pils, and various seasonal options. They also offer wine from their on-site winery.
  • Food: Features onsite food trucks serving wood-fired pizzas, burgers, and sandwiches.
  • Awards: Frequently recognized, including winning “Best Brewery in Austin” by various publications.
  • Events: Hosts community events, family movies, and is a popular spot for weekend gatherings.

As of this post, Frontyard features 16 different brew styles that range from their award-winning Double IPA to a delightful Coffee Milk Stout.

Their Belgian Blonde won third-place in the World Beer Cup.

Other offerings include, but are not limited to, BA Imperial Stout, Mexican Lager, Belgian Golden Ale and many more.

I sampled both their Hazy IPA and West Coast Pils.

The Hazy was delicious and I must admit I have one every time I visit Frontyard. It’s a full-bodied IPA with hints of stone fruit and pineapple. The hop profile includes Citra, Mosaic, Cryo and Simce Cryo. The ABV is 6.5% and IBU 30.

Lover Beer Will Travel: “Frontyard Brewing in Spicewood, TX. Paired with Five Souls winery, they share an outdoor area and food trucks. Taproom is nice and modern with a decent selection of brews and other drinks. Beer to go in cans. The Double IPA is delicious.“

The West Coast Pils is one of the better draft West Coaster’s that I have had when compared to other Hill Country breweries.

It contains most of the style profile of a West Coast IPA but has a smoother finish and more of a palatable nose that is piney (not over the top), citrusy, a hint of tropical fruits, and crisp.

Frontyard also offers wine at their onsite winery, 5 Soul Wine Company.

You can order wine by the glass from their extensive selection or wine by the bottle when you find something that peaks your palatable interest. Additionally, they serve world-class Frozés and Mimosas, along with constantly rotating seasonal specials.

Community Reviews and Comments

  • Jessica P.: Front Yard Brewery is such a great spot! The vibe is relaxed and welcoming, especially if you’re bringing kids or your pup — the large outdoor patio is perfect for that.
  • James M.: Little out of the way but worth it. Relaxing environment, family friendly, with high quality brewed beer made on-site.
  • Leah L.: Brewery and winery with the absolutely best view. And talk about beautiful grounds with something for everyone. Plenty of outdoor activities to keep you busy. Games, food trucks, merch, anything you need for a lovely day.
  • Maritza R.: Such a cute hidden gem. Stopped by while on a road trip. The employees were great and we enjoyed our drinks. I like the versatile drink menu. Some folks don’t drink beer so it’s nice to have mocktails and even drinks for the kiddos.
  • Alejandra A.: Drinks were great! Bartender friendly and welcoming. The view is great nice music, and open area for families.
  • Kristi M.: Visiting from California and I wish we had someplace like this near us! Beer, wine, cocktails and food trucks…but wait, there’s more! Pickle ball courts, cornhole, Gaga pit, huge space for kids to run around. Adirondacks around a fire pit, live music, and dog friendly!
  • Rica R.: First time visiting, and it was a great experience! I tried their frozen drink and relaxed outside in the green area. The place is super kid-friendly with plenty of seating, and there was even a day market going on while we were there. Everyone was so friendly, and the weather made it even better!
