Day 4 – Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA

Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA is one of the most recognizable American IPAs. It’s famous for its juicy, fruit-forward profile that mimics the taste of fresh-pressed citrus without actually containing any fruit.

Deschutes Brewery, located in Bend and Portland Oregon, is a pioneering, family and employee-owned craft brewery.

Deschutes is a top-10 U.S. craft brewery famous for iconic beers like Black Butte Porter and Fresh Squeezed IPA. It has grown from a local brewpub to distributing in over 30 states and maintains their commitment to community and sustainability.

About Deschutes Brewery

  • Origins: Founded by Gary Fish in 1988 in downtown Bend, Oregon, as a, community-focused brewpub
  • Signature Beers: Best known for Black Butte Porter, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, and Fresh Squeezed IPA
  • Production & Reach: Produces over 225,000 barrels annually and distributes to 30+ states, D.C., and several countries
  • Locations: Main production facility is in Bend, Oregon with public houses in Bend and Portland, Oregon. I have visited both their Bend brewery and public house on several different occasions and find both to be well run with their mission remaining the same…”creating community over damn tasty beer.”
  • Ownership: Remains family and employee-owned
  • Innovation: In addition to craft beer, they collaborate on Black Butte Whiskey

Deschutes Brewery’s Fresh Squeezed IPA Profile

  • ABV: 6.4%
  • IBU: 50-60
  • Hops: Heavy blend of Citra and Mosaic.
  • Appearance: Hazy, orange weak head that dissipates quickly.
  • Aroma: This beer is well-known as a “citrus bomb” but I don’t agree with that assessment.
  • Flavor Profile: Prominent notes of grapefruit, orange, mango, and passion fruit.
  • Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied and smooth (nothing to write home about).
  • Overall Impression: Enjoyed the general profile of this hazy but didn’t find anything that would invite me to add it to my regular rotation. The head, after pour, was minimal. The aroma was average at best, but the beer and hop profile was drinkable.
  • Price: $13.99 for a 12 pack of 12oz cans and $20.99 for a 12 pack of 12 oz. cans.

  • Craft Beer & Brewing: The panel rated it 83/100, highlighting it as a “citrus bomb” with notes of lemon, grapefruit, and a slightly sweet, bready malt body, though some reviewers found it a bit heavy on the malt.
  • Consumer Reviews: Users consistently rate it highly, often noting the strong grapefruit notes and balanced bitterness. It is considered a “solid” choice, with some reviews describing it as a “must-try.”
  • Beer Geek Stats: “This mouthwateringly delicious IPA gets its flavor from a heavy helping of Citra and Mosaic hops. Don’t worry, no fruit was harmed in the making of this beer.”
  • RomanDeltaEngin33r: “Probably the best IPA I’ve had in 8 years. Perfectly balanced…Good Lord I missed out over the past three years. Just had to share. Thoroughly impressed.”

  • GlorbAndAGloob: “Deschutes is one of my main go-tos both when picking up beer in the store and going out for a meal. This year’s fresh hop beers were the best in town.“
