The First Pour: Why We’re Getting Hopinionated

Tom BrewerJanuary 13, 2026April 18, 2026
Row of various types of beer in mugs, showcasing different colors and textures, on a wooden bar.

It’s been a while since I drank my first beer during a “Senior Skip Day” in the Midwest.

Armed with a reliable (if questionable) altered ID, we walked out of the local quick shop with a couple of cases of Budweiser and a bag of ice. We headed straight for the river—my first introduction to the twin thrills of jumping off bridges and heavy drinking.

Needless to say, I got hammered. One of my buddies eventually drove me home and dumped me off in the driveway. Fortunately, my dad was out of town on business, but my mom was very much aware of my condition the moment I stumbled inside.

Fast forward to the years after college: I’ve owned a bar, operated a liquor store, and eventually began brewing my own beer—striving to mirror the complex profiles I discovered on trips to Belgium and Germany, like Chimay, Gulden Draak, and classic Saisons.

Now, a few of my fellow beer aficionados and I have decided to launch Hopinionated.

Our Mission

Our goal is to help you discover the brews you’ll actually want to keep stocked in your fridge—and steer you clear of those that underwhelm in both taste and price.

Independence is our cornerstone. We owe no allegiance to the breweries we review. Equally important: we are not paid by the breweries, distributors, or retail partners featured on this site. Whether you’re looking for a complex Belgian Quad that reminds you of a trip to Flanders or just a solid IPA for a Saturday afternoon, we promise to give it to you straight—no filters, no fluff, and definitely no paid endorsements.

One Glass at a Time

We hope our opinions help you navigate the ever-expanding world of craft beer with confidence. Whether you’re a seasoned aficionado or just looking for something better than a “Senior Skip Day” Budweiser, we’re here to give you the honest truth, one glass at a time.

We’ve come a long way from jumping off bridges and drinking warm lagers, but the goal remains the same: enjoying a great beer with good friends. Thanks for joining us on this journey.
